Opencultuurdata.be is 1) a campaign to raise awareness about open data in the cultural and heritage sector in Flanders, and 2) an app developing contest based on open cultural data sets.
The project was inspired by the Dutch opencultuurdata.nl campaign which ran in 2011 and resulted in the creation of 27 apps, based on open cultural datasets. In total, 34 datasets were opened up by Dutch cultural and heritage institutions.

PACKED vzw is a centre of expertise in digital heritage. PACKED promotes the use of standards for the creation, preservation and online dissemination of cultural heritage content. Experience in providing support on rights management and contributing content to Europeana fostered the organisation’s idea to see how the Dutch opencultuurdata-campaign could be mirrored to a Belgian campaign.
Together with Open Knowledge Foundation Belgium and Creative Commons Belgium, a masterclass on open data was organised in May 2013 (click here for a Dutch blog review). During the two-day course, providers were informed about the necessary steps to undertake in order to open up their data. It was the aim of the organisers to have at least one open data set per participating institution, by September 21st 2013 (in the end even more content was added, hurray!). That day, 14 early bird developers came together to brainstorm about open cultural data app-ideas and to develop a first app-concept (Dutch blog review here). More developers can still join the competition and start using the open data, in order to come up with an app by the end of the year.

On December 14 2013 a closing event will be organised to mark one year of opencultuurdata.be. The event will consist of some open data lectures, pitching of the apps that have been developed and an award ceremony. Before pitching the apps to the judges, developers are welcome to join a free how-to-pitch class by OKFN, while interested visitors attend a couple of lectures. At the end of the day, there’s room for a drink …
